Our favorite things to do in London
Elsewhere Collective tours focus more on the less-touristy side of cities, however we know that many attractions are popular for a reason. We give our groups some free time to explore at their own pace or check off sites we may not visit as a group. If you're looking for ideas to fill your free time in London we have plenty of recommendations for things to do in our favorite city.
If you like museums…
The Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) is one of Jess's favorites. It's centered on decorative arts and the building is absolutely stunning. Don't miss the sculpture hall, which is a photographer's dream. Bonus: It's free.
The British Museum is probably one of the best-known museums in the world with its astounding array of antiquities from across the globe. Entry is free, but during busy periods it's wise to book a complimentary advance ticket.
The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square is a phenomenal place to check out Western European painting and it's right next to the National Portrait Gallery if you have time to peruse both. Both are free, but again, booking a complimentary advance ticket during weekends and summers is recommended.
One of Jess's favorite museums in the world is the Churchill War Rooms. It's an immersive look into the underground headquarters where Prime Minister Winston Churchill worked during World War II. This is hugely popular and must be booked in advance.
If you like culture and history…
The gardens around Kensington Palace are free and open to the public, but if you want to know more about royal history or check out any exhibitions you can book tickets to go inside.
The Tower of London is home to the world-famous Crown Jewels and explores London's medieval history. If you're into Tudor history or enjoyed (or plan on seeing) the musical Six!, this is where several of Henry VIII's wives were executed.
If you like shopping…
London is a fabulous place to shop for vintage clothes, and you'll find incredible options at the Brick Lane Vintage Market. Fancy a Burberry trench coat, a pair of distressed jeans, or a fabulous leather handbag? You'll find it all here.
Portobello Road Market is one of the most famous markets in London, and for good reason. It's chock-full of quirky homewares, vintage clothes, antiques, and art you won't find anywhere else. The market has different themes throughout the week, so vendors will change depending on the day you visit.
Can you talk about shopping in London without mentioning Harrods? This beautiful department store is an attraction in its own right. Don't miss the Chocolate Hall if you like sweets or want to bring home some delicious treats for friends and family.
If you like to be outdoors…
You'll have no trouble getting your steps in if you wander through Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. These two massive parks in the center of London are a green oasis in a hectic city. There are plenty of lovely spots for a picnic on a nice day.
The Regent's Park is another great place to escape the hustle and bustle of London. If you're visiting during late spring or summer, Queen Mary's Rose Gardens are particularly beautiful.
