Our favorite things to do in Paris
Elsewhere Collective tours focus more on the less-touristy side of cities, however we know that many attractions are popular for a reason. We give our groups some free time to explore at their own pace or check off sites we may not visit as a group. If you're looking for ideas to fill your free time in Paris we have plenty of recommendations for things to do in one of our favorite cities.
If you like museums…
The Louvre Museum is one of the most famous museums in the world, and for good reason. This historic palace and its astounding art collection are a must-see for art lovers and the grounds outside are also beautiful. Top tip: If you want to visit, buy tickets in advance and figure out what you want to see before going in. It's so large it's impossible to see the entire thing in just one afternoon.
Musee d'Orsay is another of Jess's favorites and she can't quite decide which she likes more - the building (which is a beautiful old rail station) or the art (which includes plenty of dreamy Impressionist works). We recommend booking in advance if you're interested in visiting.
If you like culture and history...
It was built nearly 900 years ago, but Notre-Dame Cathedral continues to be an architectural and cultural marvel. Francophiles around the world grieved when the cathedral burned in 2019, but after significant restoration works visitors are finally welcome again.
Is any trip to Paris complete without a chance to see the Eiffel Tower? While we'll sail past it on our Seine River cruise, you may want a closer look (or the chance to go up to the top).
The Arc de Triomphe was built to commemorate Napoleon's victories, and it's not only a historical monument but also a phenomenal viewpoint. We recommend the observation deck for beautiful views of Paris.
The absolutely stunning Basilique du Sacré-Cœur has fabulous stained-glass windows and a breathtaking view of the city. It's located in Montmartre, which is a neighborhood known for its winding streets and former glory as an artists' haven.
If you like shopping...
Paris is known for its luxury fashion, and if you want to see some of the most coveted brands in the world (or simply window shop) you can stroll down Avenue des Champs-Elysees.
Parisians love BHV so if you want to shop like a local, take a quick trip over to this department store.
If you love literature and don't speak French, a trip to Shakespeare and Company is a must. This famous English-language bookstore is a wonderful place to pick up a book or two to remind you of your travels in Paris.
If you like to be outdoors...
There's nothing more romantic than simply strolling around Paris. The Champ-de-Mars is a beautiful park nestled up against the Eiffel Tower, so the photo opportunities are unrivaled.
Even if you're not interested in visiting the Louvre, the Tuileries Garden right next door is worth a look. This expansive garden is a great place for people-watching or finding a moment of calm. The Jardin du Luxembourg is another gorgeous option.
Slightly quirky, but if you're interested in something a bit different Père-Lachaise is a beautiful cemetery where celebrities like Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison are buried.
